Kerrville Folk Festival - The Trip Home
Kerrville …
The Trip Home
Leaving Kerrville, The Quiet Valley Ranch … is never easy. Eighteen days and nights … Staying up until 3, 4, 5am playing and listening to humans tell their truths and sing their hearts, while gratifying and satisfying, … is also exhausting … therefore packing up 18 days of stuff in 90+ degree heat is hard. (I know … Wah, Wah, Wah!)
I’ll just say it’s taken me several days to recover from the Kerrville Folk Festival. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. I have arrived home with a head and heart full of new projects, songs, observations. I have found that my joy for Life comes simply from observing, noticing Life as it Happens. And sharing these observations with you. Happy, Sad, Funny, even Mundane. Life doesn’t always seem beautiful; at times it looks pretty damn ugly. When it’s ugly, the beauty is in the courage found, the lessons learned, and the Love created. Life is precious y’all!

Waffle House … The Most Beautiful Girl in the World …
Of course I stop at a Waffle House occasionally … This time I walked in, sat down, was greeted by a friendly waitress. She asked how I was doing … I was honest, I told her I was tired, “Will some coffee help?” “Yes ma’am” I said.
Then another guy walks in, younger, clean cut, but visibly not happy. He sits next to me at the counter. Waitress gives him a smile, asks him how he’s doing, he grunts, “ugh”… “Coffee?” she asks … he manages an “Uh huh”. I look at him, … he really seems to be trying to keep it together. I put my hand on his shoulder; he takes a deep breath … waitress brings his coffee ... I’m thinking what should I say? Or do? … He looks at me and the waitress and says: “I just left the most beautiful girl in the world at the airport. I don’t know when or if I’ll ever see her again.”
I patted him on the shoulder again, (he didn’t seem to mind.) Waitress said: “Tell us about her.” He did. He described the Most Beautiful Girl in The World, how they met, how they laughed, … how they cried at the airport. Waitress and I both agreed that he sounded to us like the luckiest guy in the world. By the time we both finished our All star breakfast, he was smiling as he talked about her. I heard the waitress, as he was paying for his meal, tell him: “Don’t worry Hon, everything will turn out as it should, you’re gonna be alright” 😊
Love’s and the Pee Pee song …
I make many stops at truck stops along the way. I generally make quick stops, and don’t use the stalls much. On this occasion I used a stall … (TMI?) … Well, I’m sitting there minding my own business, people coming and going, when the door to the stall next to me, opens and someone enters. The door closes, and I hear an adult say: “Don’t touch that, don’t touch THAT, … Don’t touch anything!” Then a child says: “Why? What’s that? What’s THAT? (I fully expected a little head to appear under the side of the stall and see who’s there!) … Then I hear some clothes shuffling and then …
… … The Pee Pee song! … Loud and clear! … and then it morphed into Jingle Bells! … It was all I could do not to laugh out loud … or start singing along! It’s been probably 40 years since I’ve heard the Pee Pee song! A song from a beautiful, innocent child. … the prettiest song I’ve heard since Kerrville … even better than some …
Yes friends, … Life Happens … all around us … all the time … Don’t miss out! 😊
