Just Another day at Waffle House ...

Just another day at Waffle House …

I try to live a healthy life, eat the right food, exercise my brain, my body, my soul… I would say the latter is probably the hardest to take care of. I guess all these need protection … It’s not an original concept …Mind … Body … Soul …

Sometimes what’s good for one seems not so good for the other. Say … you want to take a nap, (good for the Soul) but you haven’t had much exercise lately (good for the body)…

Or you’re craving an All Star Special at Waffle House, or a Scrambled Dog at Dinglewood Pharmacy, but you’re trying eat well. Lately I’ve been treating some of these cravings by using them as a reward for good behavior! If I pass a blood test or the scan turns out clear. I’ll treat myself. Maybe I’m returning to my childhood motivations … Remember …  When you were a child? … “Be still and quiet, and when this is over, we’ll go get some ice cream!”

So, a week or so ago I found myself at my favorite Waffle House, Enjoying my well-deserved breakfast of eggs, waffle, bacon, grits, OJ and coffee. I like sitting at the counter. You get to see and hear more Life that way, as well as it forces me to interact with strangers, in spite of my natural reservedness. There was one seat left there … a tight squeeze between two strangers. I asked the lady next to me if she minded if I sat next to her … She smiled and gestured to the seat … and returned to watching her phone …

So I enjoyed my meal, and the people watching, The wait staff giving each other a hard time, laughing and taking care of customers, several teenage boys taking up three booths, and pretty much taking up that end of the Waffle House, I’m guessing they were on the same team … Grandmom at a booth with five young’uns, aged probably 4-10 … A couple at the counter, eating enough food for four people …

The lady next to me finished up and left, she smiled at me and I told her to have a nice day … I spread out just a little bit with the extra room …

I finished up with another cup of coffee, couldn’t find my check for the meal, and decided I would just go up to the cash register and get it …

The cashier walked up and said, “Can I help you?” I told her I needed to pay for breakfast, but I didn’t get my check. I expected her to go to my waitress and get it, but instead they were half whispering to each other … The cashier came over and told me I didn’t have a check because it had already been paid! …

I was speechless! I said “Wha’? Who?’ …

She said “That lady”

I said, “What lady?”

She said, “That lady that was sitting next to you”

I said, “I don’t even know her! Who is she?”

The cashier just shrugged her shoulders, “I don’t know”.

Me “Wow! This has never happened to me, Am I supposed to pay it forward?”

Again, she shrugged her shoulders …

And everyone at the counter offered me their checks!  😊😊😊😊😊
